Molumong village

Molumong is such a big village located on the hill that goes along Senqu river in Mokhotlong district . It’s a village with a bigger number of population. There are two schools found in Molumong. The two schools includes a vocational school, where the youths are trained to do crafts work. Having a vocational school in this village it’s a big advantage to this village since the youths are equipped with some skills that help them to alleviate poverty. The school is meant for the very poor people who didn’t manage to finish their high school or even at primary level. The courses offered in this school are as follows: carpentry and joinery, catering, knitting & sewing and welding.

I arrived at the school in the morning (9:00). The students were already prepared for my visit. The smile was written on their faces. We prepared ourselves to watch a movie (the bet). While watching the movie, I had to pause it as to explain to them here and there. We enjoyed watching the movie together. After the movie I divided the big group into smaller groups and in each group there were questions to answer relating to self control as a value. Such questions were as follows:
1. How would you define self control and what are the benefits of self control?
2. How would you practice self control in your daily life and when did you have most self
3. In what situation did you fail to have self control?
4. What can you do to develop a better attitude of self control?
5. Could a relationship with God help with practicing self control?

In other small group when answering question 3, one of the students said while she was at high school (form A) her boyfriend begged her to have sex with him. She didn’t want to do it and told the boy to stop that. A boy seduced her until she gave up. The worst part is we didn’t have condoms and he impregnated me, she said. All her group mates were shocked. She said if she had this education about self control she could have not done that. She also indicated that she wish we (MMMI) could focus more on girls at high schools.

We moved to the myth busters game. The game was not as funny as it used to be, this is because there were no cards. I only found that I had forgotten them in another bag which was at home that time. Therefore they used hands instead of cards.After that we read Joseph’s story to explain the elements of self control. Only to find out that they didn’t know about such a story from the Bible. I encouraged them to have the bibles and read them and also to have a daily devotion together. Furthermore I encouraged them to abstain sex until they get married. Apart from that I shared a testimony whereby my mother was sick and she tested HIV Positive. My brothers and sisters in-laws billed her and talked behind her back. They didn’t show support to her at all. I was exemption together with my two real sisters and one brother. It was such a tough time in our
lives but God was enough to heal her. She is healthy now and following take her medication.

Sharing about my personal story was to encourage them and others to test for HIV before is too late and support one another. A sample of 10 students was asked to participate for short questionnaire. I highlighted them about the next meeting that will we have. That is we are going to discuss about Values and Money ( nothing for Mahala). We had the closing prayer together.

Second chance

At the Juvenile training Center Maseru we started off with a prayer. We performed some energizers as to break the ice.

We chose to discuss with the boys the value “second chance”. This value plays a vital role in life of someone who realizes where he went wrong as the value says it. Second chance: giving someone the opportunity to try again, even though they have might have messed up the first time. Most of them wrote their final exams by last year so some of them managed to pass their exams while few didn’t manage to do it. This value was to bring hope to the boys who didn’t manage to pass their exams and also motivate them all and inspire them as one day they will be released from JTC therefore they have to use that opportunity as a second chance in their life.

I shared with the boys about my life story where I had to make use of the value “second chance”. In 2010 I was studying Mechanical Engineering. It was a 3 years course offered a full sponsorship by the government. I didn’t manage to complete even the first year. It was so challenging for me to continue with the course, the failure rate was also high in this course. I decided to quit the school and find a work since I had no money to pay the school fees by myself. It was such a tough time in my life whereby some of the family members rejected me. I couldn’t get a better job to save money for going back to school. In 2014 I decided to go back to the same school but I changed the course even though I had no money to pay but I trusted God to take control of my fees. God used people that I respect and trust to pay for all my fees while I was in my first year of Fitting and machinery. I was so amazed! I took that opportunity as the second chance given to me from God therefore that made me to work extra miles. I passed with flying colors until now where I will be graduated in March this very year. I’m so glad about the love of God. The boys were so motivated and inspired.

We also read a motivational story from the Bible in Luke 15:11-32 Furthermore we read the story of Bob Nameng from heartlines Bob Nameng was a neglected street child. He was given a second chance by his adoptive mother, Mama Eva. When Bob grew up he decided to start a youth club, known as SKY. He saw the club as the answer to the problem that many young people in the township don’t have a safe place to go where people will motivate and care for them. Bob says, ‘ I won’t let any child suffer what I had to. They are our Kings and Queens.”

We divided the boys into smaller and giving them some motivating words. Encouraging them to have a hope in their life and follow their dreams. “God’s second chances are unconditional, lavish and generous”.

Village outreach

We started playing football together with the guys.  We were so exicited to have a sunny day after a heavy non-stop rain that took us a week. Most of the boys in this group are at the beggining of their high school level. It is the most challenging stage in many Basotho boys who are living in rural areas. Many of them move to urban areas or change the environment they are currently living in. Therefore they encounter some different challenges such as choosing good friends, peer presure from friends and the environment itself. They drop from school because of various reasons such as pre-marital stage as they impreganate their schoolmates (girls) and many more. The parents and the chief from the community are worried about the future of their children therefore they trusted me to talk to their boys before the schools reopen.

After playing soccer we had a team talk where  we discussed about self control.
The boys were divided into to small groups according to their age class. In each group, the following questions were asked.

1. How would u define self-control?
2. When have you been filled with self-conrol the most?
3. How do you practice self-control in your daily life?
4. What are the benefits of self control?
5. What can you do to develop a better attitude of self-control?
6. Could a relationship with God help with practicing self control?
7. When have you been filled with self -control the most?
8. In what situation did you fail to have a self-control in which you should have?

The boys had different answers in reply to the above questions.
We read the story of Joseph from the bible. In the begining of the story, they were laughing at Joseph, making some Sesotho jokes out of  him. We read  his story further up to where they were impressed about Joseph’s life.

Furthermore we played the myth busters game. Some statements were making them to burst into laughter while some created discussions. Therefore I explained what is correct.
At the end I asked them some questions as to check their listening skill. The rewards for each  correct question was an exercise book.  This was to support them in their education and encourage them to work hard at school. We had prayer together and shouted good bye!

Malefiloane village

Malefiloane is a big rural village. The village is about 3km away from the main road. The road to this village is not easily accessible. There is a primary school in this village. The people walk about 10 Km to the clinic, to access the health facilities as well as the children walk the same distance to go to the high school. Many children become shepherds after completing at primary level since the high school if far  as their families can’t affort money for transport daily. People from this village live on farming for their families consumption not for sale.

During my arrival, I was welcomed with the open arms. There were many kids all over. I started playing games with them. After every game we had debrief. The children enjoyed the games and some (older) had some questions. For instance in a game we played: one person is being blindfolded, the clothing pegs plunged on his/ her clothes and is in the center of the circle. She or he is turning around trying to catch others but still in a circle. The pegs are called the soldiers of the body and other people are HIV so they are attacking the soldiers of the body.  One of them asked ” Do the kids have weak soldiers of the body as they get sick more and often?”  The reply was no.
In the meanwhile I was done with the kids and  I talked to the youth. There were few ladies and one guy among them. We discussed more  of the myths normaly Basotho ladies have. After some clarifications It was already late and we had to disperse. We planed to have another outreach soon with them. We had the prayer together and said goodbye.
